Why are carbs so complicated?
Carbs, love them or hate them, this macronutrient also plays important roles in the body.
There seems to be a lot of confusion about whether they are “good” or “bad” so here are some facts:
✨ Carbs breakdown into glucose which is a main energy source for your cells
🥗 Plant foods including fruit, vegetables and grains all contain carbohydrates
🌾 Carbohydrate rich foods contain fibre which have many benefits for gut health (so much so I will bang on about this in a separate post)
💪🏻 Glucose (from carbs) is stored in our muscles and is really beneficial for maintaining energy and optimal performance when exercising
Unfortunately this amazing nutrient is used in huge amounts within the food industry where many of the nutrients and fibre are processed out, refined sugar added in, resulting in a severe lack of quality nutrition. This is where carbs have caught a bad rap, it’s the refined, processed food “products” we should be minimising.
So please, don’t fear carbs, here are some great carbohydrates you can enjoy for an array of nutrients and benefits for health.
Quinoa, rice, sweet potato, carrots, beetroot, bananas, apples, dates, oats, good quality bread, mangos, kidney beans, lentils, peas, parsnip, pinto beans and the list goes on!!
Our macronutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrate) are all important nutrients to include on a daily basis. Focus on quality and variety!
